A giant bluefin tuna was auctioned off for $177,000 (6.3 million yen) Tuesday at the largest fish market in Japan.
The 513-pound fish was the most expensive sold one in 9 years, when a 440-pound tuna sold for a record $220,000 (20.2 million yen) at Tokyo’s Tsukiji market in 2001.
The massive tuna was bought by the owners of two Japanese sushi restaurants and one Hong Kong sushi retailer, according to an anonymous market representative.
The fish was caught in the waters north of Japan. The fish was on display among 570 others. 40 percent of the auctioned fish came from outside Japan, coming from as far as Indonesia and Mexico.
