In an interview yesterday, the super-heavyweight of videogaming Will Wright commented on his newly formed company: “The Stupid Fun Club”. The visionary behind such blockbuster titles as The Sims, SimCity, and most recently: Spore, Wright knows his way through the gaming industry.
When he announced his separation from EA earlier this year, he surprised everyone with the creation of a mini-company: The Stupid Fun Club. As of now it is comprised almost entirely of staff from Maxis: “Just about everyone working here, with the exception of one or two, are people I have been working with for more than 10 years.” said Wright. “We are very small and will stay small. We are 12 people right now. I don’t ever want it to go above 30.”
He also commented on their current work: “Right now we are pursuing three [projects] pretty aggressively. We might get up to four or five. I want to stay pretty focused. We have a lot of ideas that we want to do. But it’s just three now.” He also made it very clear that all of his future projects “have a web component. The web is like the connective tissue in entertainment today”
He closed with a bit of a teaser: “Our first product could be commercialized in six months to a year. I have my fingers crossed.”
