Call of Duty: MW2 is arguably one of the most realistic combat simulators available. Former Army Ranger Eddie Torres agrees that MW2 is visually stunning and at times surprisingly real. He also said the game brings a rush that is similar to the one gotten in actual combat, but the representation of combat is fairly flawed. Many of the most important scenes fall short of reality

One of the problems Torres had with the game was the realism of events in the campaign. Although riding a helicopter through a hot combat zone might seem like a fun way to spend your Sunday afternoons, Torres has seen that situation go bad and it is not for the faint of heart, “I saw a helicopter crash and it was brutal. I want to say of 25 passengers… four might survive.” Even if you are one of the lucky survivors, permanent incapacitation and death are not far off after that. So it is safe to say that there is no way you could jump into a fire fight right after a helicopter crash.

Another interesting inaccuracy deals with night visions devices; in particular a device used by soldiers called Aviator mods. Torres said this about Infinity wards equipment choice: “rangers wouldn’t use aviator mods. We use PVS 14’s, night vision monocular. The reason is having one of your eyes adjusted to night vision gives you some kind of depth perception. [When using night vision] Things close to you look further away. Your night eye is adjusted to dept and your night vision eye lets you see what is around you. If it came to an emergency situation where you engaged in a [lit] room, you would still have your other eye.”

Although Torres took issue with the game scenarios and equipment choices he did not have much to say in terms of gameplay. However, one of the few gameplay gaff s that stuck out to Torres dealt with reloading. Spam reloading is rampant in MW2, and Torres would definitely agree that always having a ready weapon is a plus, but “in a real life scenario, you aren’t going to reload every three shots.” Soldiers are trained to be aware of how much ammo they have left and to conserve every round.

Many people will never know the feeling of being in a full-out war, and that is the reason MW2 has been so successful in bringing the desperation of real combat into the safety of our living rooms, but in reality death isn’t just a reason to use the restroom and crack another soda.

Mr. Torres didn't cover the fact that riot shields will not stop assault rifle fire, or that ducking under a bouncing betty mine will not save your life
  • i stopped reading after the first sentence. this game isnt realistic at all. you whip around the gun like a piece of stryofoam. ive handled guns before, i know whats realistic, not this. go to killzone 2 for a more realistic feel, but even that, it isnt realistic at all.

He has no gripe with recharging health, but the FUCKING night vision use he seems to get mad about. Tell me the logic there. Get over yourself douchebag.

    Champaign lol. line 5.

my main gripe with the game is the barrett 50 cal rifle. i have actually held the real thing and let me tell you, U CAN NOT RUN AROUND AND SHOOT 10 SHOTS LIKE ITS A PEASHOOTER. this gun weighs 30 lbs, and just taking 1 shot while standing will practically knock u down or practically rip ur arm off. u cant run and gun with it

Some people don't reload after each shot.

We know that Helicopters can crash

His only valid point is the NVGs

If a person wants a real army simulator, obvious use America's Army, or the Battlefield 2 mod, Project Reality.
  • Smoke
Well no shit, its a damn game.
  • moeper
yeah, some people though think that a real soldier laughs after being hit by a machine gun or granade and goes on fighting. Medic? Don't need one. after all there isn't one in mw2 either O.o

If this guy wants a realistic combat simulator, then Modern Warfare 2 isn't it. He should be playing ArmA II or Operation Flashpoint if he wants games that adhere more strictly to authenticity of military equipment and tactics. Modern Warfare 2 is nothing more than an arcadish approximation of warfare that is intentionally simple to appeal more to younger and/or less hardcore gamers.

Shoot a guy once in real life with an SMG he's pretty much dead or too injured to do anything but in this you have to use about a 1/4 of your clip! But it is pretty realistic in some ways but not even the top troops would kill that many enemies in a tour.

Realistic? Yea I also lolled at that one

Yea sure... I guess in real life you can also get shot 10 times then just hide around a corner and regen

    MW2 is entertainment, nothing more.

First off - Thank you, Eddie Torres for your service!

Second - To the guy lol'd at the "stupidity". I would think being an Army Ranger would qualify you to make a statement like that. Are you military? What are you're qualifications or are you just another MW2 hater?

I am not saying there aren't other games that might also be realistic combat simulators or even a better ones. However, if this is close to the real thing what does it matter?
  • Phos
Yes, thank you for your services Mr. Torres.

Back to the matter at hand. I can say I'm not military but I know that MW2 is far from real life. There is almost nothing realistic about the game. The closest thing to realism is the weapons.. not HOW the shoot, or HOW they sound, but what they look like. That's the only thing they have accurately depicted.

Using "Akimbo" Desert Eagles? Seriously? Literally impossible.

Barret M82 - 107? (the .50 cal) Let's classify it as a sniper rifle when it isn't one. It's an ani-material rifle. It CAN be used as one but no one would ever run around with that thing , EVER.

Why can the FIM-92 take down a helicopter in 1 hit while the AT4-HS and Javelin can't?

Why doesn't the Desert Eagle jam when you shoot it quickly? Let me tell you, it'll jam even when you are taking time with your shots. That's probably the LEAST reliable "hand guns" I've ever fired in my entire life.

I honestly want to know what makes you think this game is "close to the real thing?" Really.

    lol wut?
"Call of Duty: MW2 is arguably one of the most realistic combat simulators available."
Try Arma II or Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and compare the level if realism to MW2
